chuckynjwvu asked:
I want to add insulation to the attic of the house we just bought. I think there is some history of a roof leak that’s been repaired, and the insulation that’s currently there looks pretty beat up. Should I remove the old stuff and completely replace it? Or is it ok to just add onto it? Thanks

You could remove the old if you wish, but cost is high. Now if the water damage was extensive possible mold issue, and because it,s insulation it will harbour and the mold will feed on it.Spend the extra dollars and get professional air analysis company to test air quality both in the attic and home, then if all clear insulate, insulate. Might want to check if you have sufficient air flow through the soffit and the roof vents.

I’d take out anything that looks water damaged. Insulation needs “loft” to work(fluffy). Compresses insulation doesn’t do much, and there is the mold issue already mentioned. If the roof leaks were not extensive, you can probably take out a small portion of the insulation. What you are looking for is compressed looking, maybe even still wet stuff in the areas underneath the former roof leaks (look for stains in the sheathing or new sheathing) But as long as the insulation does not look like it has been damaged specifically by water and is not all smushed down, you can leave it.

any signs of water on insulation and it should be replaced
